“1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

“2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;” - Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 (KJV)

Since you are reading this post, you are most likely familiar with “Hosanna” Quartet, begun in 1995, with the vision and goal of establishing a Southern Gospel Quartet as a Christian ministry, sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through song and witness. It is with a heavy heart for many reasons, and after many prayers asking for guidance and answers, we must announce to our many friends made and supporters gained over the years, the time has come for the lack of a better word, to “hang it up…”

Over the span of 24 years, we have been blessed by a great group of men who has stepped up at different times as needed, to start, build and continue Hosanna: Raymond Johnson (lead), Jonny Freeman (baritone), Gerald Vance (tenor), Ray Gates (bass), Bob Allen (piano, deceased), H. M. “Sonny” Riley (baritone, bass guitar), Keith Maddox (lead), Rev. Danny Dickerson (lead), Tommy Meadows (driving us safely for many, many miles), Johnny McKissack (lead), David Lewis (tenor) and Bo Sullivan (tenor). In the same paragraph, we must thank our wives and families, who have sacrificed and supported Hosanna unselfishly over all these many years. We could NOT have done it without their support and love. No way!

There’s no telling how many hours these men sacrificed and dedicated to learning the songs, unloading, setting up, and then loading equipment, traveling, preaching and doing what Hosanna was there for: presenting the Good News of Jesus Christ through prayer, carefully chosen songs, and Christian witness. (Now, let’s not forget the eating and fellowship!) Not to mention the many hours in the studio recording the tapes and CD’s! Thank you to each and every one who contributed. Many friends and Christian friendships were made during this time frame and it would be impossible to even begin to name them, as they are scattered from Texas to Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana and of course our home state, Mississippi! We have grown to know and love many others in quartets, trios, etc., that share the same vision with us, carrying the Gospel to this lost and dying world.

As you know, Ray Gates recently went on to be with the Lord, and we are still trying to digest that. He was definitely one of a kind, who could sing with a huge range, from low-down to up high in the tenor range and all in between! If you heard him preach, you knew that God was leading him there as well. I loved seeing him greet and make new friends everywhere we went, and hearing his masterful style of handling the “talking” for Hosanna… We will miss his ever-present smile, and hearing him whistling as he walked down the hall coming toward the studio, on the rare occasion he was late for quartet practice. His stock answer when I would call him to check on his availability for a certain date, was “Book it!” He was always ready. Humble… He wouldn’t tell of the honors given to him or Hosanna, but I would, and when the time was appropriate, I did.  He also did not let it be known when he helped people personally, and Hosanna didn’t know it either, but now some of those kindnesses are coming to the surface. We are so very happy for him while at the same time sad that we, and Ray’s family, and so many other people who knew and loved him, have lost such a fine Christian gentleman and friend. We only want to be in the will of the Lord and many things have pointed to the direction we must go, and your prayers are coveted for Ray’s family, and for all the members of Hosanna, past and present. Thank you, and may God Bless each and every one of you. – Horace M. “Sonny” Riley – Hosanna
